Jones, CPM

Summer like months for some of us can bring about actions that seem to throw caution to the wind. Above all, when it comes down to our eating traditions fun dinning is foremost and whether the food is healthy or not is unimportant, as long as it tastes good is seemingly all that matters. But, eating is no joke as food itself can be a leading cause to a lengthy life or an early termination. A high nutrient diet-style helps lower the risk of all cancers, whereas there is plenty of proof showing how eating certain foods negatively work into running the risk of contracting colon cancer and other diseases.

We all know the foods like red and processed meats, not to mention salt, processed sugar, white flour, and other processed foods are named causes of mental and physical illnesses. Even with our access to so much vital information, too many of us overlook consuming green vegetables every day. The evidence shows that green vegetables are the most protective food for fighting off cancers of the colon, rectum, lungs and prostate gland. Cauliflower, cabbage, cress, bok choy, broccoli and similar green leafy vegetables (cruciferous vegetables) are well thought-out by science as the most powerful weapon against all forms of cancer and especially colorectal cancer.

It is the childhood diet that creates adult cancers, therefore the serious problem is not with the health of grown folks but with how grown-ups are consciously misguiding succeeding generations away from the importance of consuming fresh fruits and vegetables. When young folks do not eat fruits and vegetables and instead eat processed junk food items it lays the groundwork for cancer and other diseases as they age. We openly acknowledge the wrong foods like smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol for young people because it will mess up their future. Although, because it is socially acceptable regularly giving kids sugary items, or loading them up on fried foods that are often cooked in trans fat is something that seems like no big deal.

On the other hand, it is a big deal as consuming things like sugary drinks, doughnuts, cookies, cupcakes and candy on a daily basis instigates a slow destruction for serious illness just as smoking cigarettes will do. It is time to heed your family’s health call and read labels, for example like the ones on bottled ketchup. Not unlike other processed foods, ketchup is filled with salt, high-fructose corn syrup and sugar, just like the average butter and cheese is full of saturated fat and fat-delivered chemical pollutants. Packaged potato chips are packed with trans fat, salt, and carcinogenic acrylamides (chemical compounds). Similarly, sausages, hot dogs, pickled- smoked- or barbecued meats and other packaged meats contain nitrosamines which too are carcinogens frequently linked to factors causing stomach cancer and high blood pressure.

www.SugarAlert.com
Dean Jones, Ethics Advocate, Southland Partnership Corporation (a public benefit organization), contributes his view on health attributes of packaged foods & beverages.

By Dean L.
